Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Usable Security
Salary: CAD $40,000--$60,000 per year, depending on qualifications
We have an immediate vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow at LERSSE, at the
University of British Columbia, Vancouver. One project, which is
investigating the human, organizational, and technological factors
influencing the effectiveness of Identity Management systems and
processes within organizations, will require the post-doctoral fellow to
manage the project and conduct semi-structured and contextual interviews
in the field. The postdoctoral fellow will also work closely with
several PhD and Masters students as they conduct research in usable
privacy and security. Current projects include an investigation of user
account control practices on personal computers, an examination of
methods of increasing the usability of personal firewalls, and
techniques for improving the usability of end user access control
systems which requires complex configuration.
The successful candidate will have substantial prior training in human
computer interaction (HCI) and should have experience with usability
evaluations, comparative evaluations, field research, and qualitative
data analysis. Knowledge of the technical aspects of security systems is
an asset; however, the priorities will be on skills necessary to perform
both qualitative and quantitative research. While programming skills are
not central to the position, some familiarity with software development
and project management is needed.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to work closely with the
principal investigator, coordinate project activities, work with
graduate students on the various projects, and be productive, highly
organized, independent, and creative. We are looking specifically for a
self-starter who is able to organize the research and lead the student
researchers. Therefore, excellent communication and interpersonal skills
are critical. Experience with collaborative research projects is
beneficial. The successful candidate is expected to publish in
international conferences and journals with the team of researchers on
the project. This position is ideal for someone looking for a stepping
stone to a faculty position as there are many aspects that are the same
as a junior faculty position.
Interested applicants should submit:
(1) a letter of application, (2) a statement of how her/his educational
and research experience qualify the applicant for the position, and (3)
a recent curriculum vitae. In addition, the applicant should be prepared
to have three letters of reference submitted on her/his behalf.
Screening of applications will begin immediately, and proceed until the
position is filled. Electronic submission of applications is strongly
preferred, and should be directed to:
